Simons Architects was hired as part of a larger effort to upgrade the athletic facilities across the NYA campus. We studied many options, including building a new arena, converting the existing arena to a gymnasium and fitness center, and then converting the existing gymnasium to a performing arts center.
In the end, the school decided to build a new 4,500sf addition to the existing Travis Roy Ice Arena. The addition includes a fitness and wellness center overlooking the NYA athletic fields as well as new offices, locker rooms, and classrooms. The project also included a full renovation of the existing Travis Roy Ice Arena which added over 100 seats in a raised seating area with increased visibility to the ice, a viewing balcony for spectators as well as a new entry vestibule, hall of fame space, and renovated locker rooms. The upgrades also provided improved accessibility for all spectators in the facility.
