The Ronald McDonald House provides a homelike environment to families of sick children who travel from around the state during extended hospital visits. It also supports a community-wide volunteer network that works with the families during difficult times.
Our work with Ronald McDonald House Charities began in 1995. The project included four buildings located within walking distance of the Maine Medical Center in Portland. A former warehouse of 13,000 sq ft was completely renovated to provide space for 15 family guest-rooms, the manager’s apartment, and a full range of living and support spaces. A new addition was built to house living rooms, the teen room, and enclose the summer garden space. Two houses were removed to make room for outdoor terraces, playground and lawns.
SA has continued to partner with the Ronald McDonald House on a project that expanded their original facility and the ability to house more families for longer term stays. The latest Carleton Street expansion project added fifteen guest-rooms with individual restrooms to provide added comfort for families over the duration of their stay. There are two common kitchens in the expansion to encourage gathering with other families. The project was completed in the Summer of 2020.
